Jan 7: Holding Court
Torch George scored a ‘touchdown’ during a comedy bit as the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters took on the Washington Generals in front of thousands of fans at SaskTel Center on Jan. 5.
Jan 9: Deceptively pretty
The sun shines through branches coated in ice, Jan 6. While beautiful to look at, rime icing can create headaches for SaskPower when the extra weight brings down power lines.
Jan 10: Small kid, big show
Vince Nimchuk shows his grandson, Rocco Knihnitski, the machinery at the western Canadian Crop Production Show at Prairieland Park’s World Trade Center on Jan. 9. The popular event, which has been held since 1983, ran until Jan. 12.

Jan 11: A wintry scene
Helen Fehr enjoys a frosty run along the river on Jan 10. Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a fog advisory that day, which was expected to expire in the early morning on Jan 11.
Jan 13: BRIT is underway

Jan 14: Hoops heaven
After a two-year absence due to the pandemic, championship Saturday night at the Bedford Road Invitational Tournament (BRIT) was just hours away on Jan. 14. Semifinals at the 53rd annual event were set for 1:30 pm and 3 pm, with the winners advancing to the final at 9 pm

On Jan. 19, first responder crews removed a resident from an apartment building in the 300 block of Avenue B South after reports of a fire in the building.
Jan 21: Community in grief
Members of the Islamic community gathered Jan. 20 at the Baitur Rehmat Mosque to hold prayers for the victims of a deadly terrorist attack at a mosque in Burkina Faso on Jan. 18, when gunmen interrupted evening prayers and killed nine men.
Jan 23: Huskies give boost to cancer charity
The University of Saskatchewan women lost a pair of Canada West games Jan. 20 and 21 against the University of Alberta. The Jan. 20 game was part of Play for a Cure Night at Merlis Belsher Place, with all auction proceeds donated to Pancreatic Cancer Canada.

Donovan Bailey signs the arm of Tavares Gervais at the Knights of Columbus Games. Bailey, the former world record holder and 1996 Olympic champion in the men’s 100 meters, was in the city on Jan. 26 and 27 for the games, which wrapped up Jan. 28 at the Saskatoon Field House.
Jan 28: Teamwork
Runners compete in the elementary relays at the Knights of Columbus Indoor Games in Saskatoon on Jan 26. Action continued Jan 27 and wrapped up Jan 28 at the Saskatoon Field House. The games returned after a two-year COVID-19 pause.
Jan 30: Speedsters
Sprinters contest the men’s 50-metre final at the Knights of Columbus indoor games on Jan. 25 at the U of S Fieldhouse. Usheoritse Itsekiri of the University of Regina crossed the line first in 5.75 seconds.

Jan 31: The Deep freeze
Keep the hats and gloves close at hand as frigid temperatures are expected most of the week. Daytime highs will hit -19 C on Jan 31, -17 C on Feb 1 and -23 C on Feb 2 before the area returns to average temperatures by the weekend.
