Saskatoon Meals Financial institution reopens after weather-related closure

The food bank is open again.

The Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Center was forced to close on Wednesday due to the snowy weather conditions, but the nonprofit was open and running again on Thursday, according to Deborah Hamp, the director of operations.

“We had staff away that were having a difficult time traveling,” Hamp said, adding that this week wasn’t the first time extreme weather impacted the food bank’s operations.

“People understand that safety comes first, and wanting everyone to be safe and sound would take precedence,” Hamp said.

The food bank is open from Monday through Friday from 8:30 am until 11:45 am, and from 12:30 pm to 3 pm

Hamp said the food bank has seen a busy holiday season, and was helping along a successful fundraising season with their “Light It Up” campaign set to end on Dec 31. But, Hamp noted, there is still a need for donations as the food bank sees 20,000 visitors each month.

“The need is ever-present, every month of the year,” she said.
