Saskatoon church buildings coming underneath tax evaluation microscope
The city is conducting a tax review of houses of worship to assess the primary use of church buildings.
The details of the review will be presented to the Executive Board today.
Places of worship are usually exempt from paying taxes, but many of the 150 buildings scattered across the city have not been inspected in years.
How is the church space used
“Inspections of tax-exempt properties have historically been a lower priority than taxable properties,” the report said.
“Some of these properties have not been inspected in decades.”
Currently, only residential parts of properties may be identified in the assessment protocols.– Report to the board of directors
The city plans to start on-site inspections this year.
The information gathered could highlight real estate income unrelated to its role as a place of worship.
In the questionnaire to the building owners, information on the public letting frequency, the frequency of use and the actual total rent are requested.
