Absorb a free live performance: 5 issues to do that weekend in Saskatoon

This weekend, take in a live concert, learn about wildlife, experience a library program, or cheer on the Hilltops.

It’s easy to keep busy this weekend with concerts, programs and activities for all ages.

1 — Enjoy a band camp concert

Presented by the Saskatchewan Band Association, the Saskatoon Band Camp was held this week. Led by camp coordinator Meribeth Gautier, the camp is dedicated to developing youth musicians and culminates in a public performance. The concert is Friday at 1 pm in the Quance Theater at the University of Saskatchewan. Admission is free, with silver and food donations accepted for camp costs and the Saskatoon Food Bank.

2 — See what wildlife gets up to after hours

A comedic adult-only event, Meewasin Valley Authority’s Naughty by Nature returns to the Beaver Creek Conservation Area this summer. Tour the river valley with storyteller and conservationist Jamie Harder and learn about wildlife mating and courtship strategies. Local foods and beverages are included. 3 — Participate in a library program

Each weekend, the Saskatoon Public Library hosts a variety of programs at several branches around Saskatoon. On Friday and Saturday, take in story times for families, or one for babies, plus reading programs, writing workshops, tech help and counselling. Go Science is a program in partnership with the Saskatchewan Science Center where you can learn about robots, coding and climate change. Learn more at saskatoonlibrary.ca.

4 — Listen to local music downtown

Downtown Saskatoon hosts Noon Tunes on Saturdays this summer through the end of August. Local musicians share their songs over the lunch hour in an outdoor location downtown. This Saturday, Pandemic Pals perform on the front lawn of the Sheraton Cavalier Hotel. Learn more at dtnyxe.ca.

5 — Cheer on the Hilltops

The Saskatoon Hilltops start their football season this weekend with a game against the Winnipeg Rifles. Cheer them on Sunday at 1 pm at SMF Field in the Gordie Howe Sports Complex. The team is also celebrating alumni weekend. Alumni are encouraged to wear their rookie jackets at the game and gather at field level at half time. Learn more at saskatoonhilltops.com.
